Now that work is output, collaged or merged with other images and input back in with new stylistic controls, what do we have?

In painting we often paint layers before the work begins, often described as “building history”. This work allows us to create a more robust work. So how do we circumvent the flatness of much of the AI? What would happen if we build a history behind it?
